Modern Metallographic Equipment at UNIWA: A Complete Installation by AppLES

The team of Applied Laboratory And Engineering Solutions – AppLES recently completed the installation and demonstration of a full metallographic equipment setup at TribLab (Surface Engineering Laboratory) of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of West Attica (UNIWA).

Installed Equipment

The installation included four advanced systems from the German manufacturer QATM, fully covering the metallographic sample preparation and analysis process:

  • Qcut 200A: An automatic precision cutting machine, ideal for preparing samples without thermal damage or deformation. This cutter features automatic movement across all three axes.
  • Qpol 250A1 ECO: A grinding and polishing system with automated parameter control, ensuring stable and repeatable results.
  • Infiltration Unit: A vacuum embedding unit for efficient encapsulation of metallographic samples, ensuring deep resin penetration and mechanical stability during processing.
  • Qness 10M EVO: A high-precision microhardness tester with automated hardness measurement in VickersBrinell, and Micro-Vickers scales, offering advanced data logging and analysis capabilities.

Demonstration and training

The demonstration was carried out using real samples, with the goal of familiarizing users with the equipment and optimizing operational parameters for maximum efficiency.

The installation took place at TribLab,  http://triblab.mech.uniwa.gr strengthening the lab’s research infrastructure within the framework of the TWINSOLARSURF project. The goal is to develop advanced methods for the preparation and characterization of ultra-hard materials and surfaces.

Association with the TWINSOLARSURF project

This initiative was implemented under the EU-funded project TWINSOLARSURF, coordinated by the Surface Engineering Laboratory (TribLab) of UNIWA. The project's aim is to upgrade and complement the lab’s existing equipment with state-of-the-art systems that support its research capabilities in the fields of surface engineering and advanced material characterization.

With extensive experience in metallographic analysis, our company provides solutions tailored to the specific needs of each partner—ensuring the proper selection of equipment and its effective implementation in real-world applications.

QATM equips the new generation of researchers at UNIWA with reliable tools and cutting-edge technology, and AppLES stands by their side with technical support, training, and expertise.
